Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
