'Sweet game'

She explained his victims were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer program which he operated.

The defendant engaged in a "sweet game" with the children, the legal counsel said, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were settling down and ask them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She told the court the man had engaged in this activity with the children "repeatedly", and youngsters had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She explained the defendant had been able to explain this for many years as the youngsters being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had worries in summer 2025.

The prosecutor continued: "In the summer" his stepchild had worries about the situation, for good reason.

"They resolved" to examine in the man's possessions."

She explained Ruben proceeded to engage in the "treat game" with six boys that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the next day.

"The police had not responded by that stage," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was examining law enforcement's management of the events.

The legal representative stated the minors were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson notified the law enforcement again.

She said the defendant then played the "treat game" in a room of five minors.
