The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
